Pedestrian Collisions
Humans and motor vehicles share space in and near roadways, parking lots and driveways. When a human and a vehicle collide it often results in serious or catastrophic injuries, including death. Pedestrian injuries are increasing. In 2010, 4,280 pedestrians died in traffic crashes, a 4% increase from the number reported in 2009. In 2011, an estimated 69,000 pedestrians were injured, 11,000 of those injured were age 14 and younger, and males accounted for 65% (7,000) of those 11,000 injured. In 2009, 16 percent of all traffic fatalities in the United States were among people age 65 and older. Those alarming statistics were complied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
